Lady Of The Vale

(St Mary’s, Bottesford)

Prettier than a picture, elegant as a queen,

her presence fills the landscape; her purpose ever has been

a mission of hope and encouragement to pilgrims tired and frail

as she opens her heart of compassion this Lady of the Vale.

The eastern sun climbs slowly, breaking the shackles of night,

steering her rays to windows already alive with light,

with saints and apostles ecstatic milling around their Lord,

and angels from heaven with hosannas proclaiming His wonderful word.

Not only these stained-glass windows are telling this story of old

of the sad and the hopeless He rescued, of the love He poured out on the world.

But for centuries now by her presence as her spire reaches out to the sky

she’s been fulfilling her purpose, proclaiming a Father on high.

Her walls are embellished with creatures from a dark and fearful day

when folk were obsessed with evil, when demons and witchcraft held sway.

Her lawns are adorned with the tombstones of many who travelled this path

and whose epitaphs show clearly that the Church had brought them to faith.

The classical sounds from her bell-tower echo sweetly through the air,

inviting the hearers to worship, calling the faithful to prayer,

and, over the years and the ages, embracing both birth and death.

This magnificent church of St Mary’s stands tall as a triumph of faith.
